Grace Family Vineyards is both a Napa Valley wine estate and an ethos, a place where the intersection of the land and human endeavor results in wines of the highest caliber.
There are some places on earth that are unlike any others. Wine gives these places a voice.
Dick and Ann Grace established Grace Family Vineyards in April 1976, planting their St. Helena vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings from the legendary Bosché Vineyard in Rutherford. They sold the property in 2019, and it continues as a family-owned winery today. Dick and Ann still live at the estate, surrounded by the team and vines they established many years ago.
The first harvest at Grace was picked by family and friends in 1978 and taken to Caymus Winery in the back of a station wagon. When Charlie Wagner, the late Caymus patriarch, tasted those first grapes, he exclaimed, “You know, Dick, this is damned fine fruit!” And so one of the Napa Valley’s first vineyard designated wines was produced.
Though Grace Family Vineyards Cabernet became one of Napa Valley’s first “cult” wines renowned throughout the wine world, it remained a small, family affair for the next forty years.
“When it became apparent it was time to pass along our property, we felt it imperative that the new owners have the same reverence for this hallowed ground that we have had. It is our distinct pleasure to pass the stewardship of Grace Family Vineyards to the Green family. We feel certain they will enhance and enrich this land for many years to come.”
Every person at Grace puts their heart and soul into their work and the finished wine. The sense of ownership, pride and teamwork here is palpable.
Caring for the vitality of the greater ecosystem is integral to the way Grace Family’s vineyards are cultivated.
“Winegrowing’s next frontier is encouraging the health of the biome and microbiota. Healthy microbiota improves the health and longevity of the vines.”
The decades-long friendship between Winemaker Helen Keplinger and Viticulturist and Master Gardener Kendall Smith is accompanied by like minded sensibilities and an unswerving dedication to the health of the vineyards. They are an integral part of a small team that has been with Grace Family Vineyards for decades, the personal, human element that continues to be at the winery’s core.
“Our love of the land brought us here. The people who care for it inspired us to stay.”
The vineyard and winemaking records at Grace Family go back decades, but the team still talks through every task, every day. They don’t just do it the way they’ve always done it.
Today, Grace Family Vineyards comprises several Napa Valley vineyards represented by a portfolio of distinct bottlings. Like the original Grace Estate, each site has the strength, character and quality to qualify as a vineyard-designate worthy of the Grace Family Vineyards label.
“The essence of Grace has always been about family, team, generosity and producing a world class wine. As we look to the future, our family is committed to preserving the winery’s great legacy while we work to grow ever more delicious and sustainable grapes and wine.”
